The iPhone was fine, but it felt like I wasn’t getting the best deal for what I was paying. And so, armed with a new prepaid smartphone and a fresh Google account, I set out to populate my phone with whatever apps would be useful. It turns out that it’s remarkably difficult to find good free Android apps, some of those apps are clunky and some of them are badly designed. But some of them were really good, and some of those made my new Android phone feel like a totally new product that was miles ahead of the iPhone. And so, for the benefit of anyone else who takes a look at switching to an Android from an iPhone, here’s a list of the best free Android apps I found. If you want a non-free great alternative to Evernote, check out Springpad . It allows you to save notes online as well as save notes on your phone or tablet. It has many of the same features as Evernote, like voice note taking, but it also has its own unique features. You can share your notes with other Springpad users and you can share to Facebook or Twitter with your notes for others to see. Note: This app is available both on iPhone and Android. You might wonder why I would make an app like this one, but I find it incredibly useful. It requires no data plan if you don’t want it to (why I use the WiFi only setting). And if you are traveling with your phone, this app will give you information on WiFi access points near you. It has a "restaurants nearby" set up too, which is perfect for finding free WiFi near restaurants. There is also an Android version of this app. If you travel to many different countries over the years, then the TripIt app is great for keeping track of all your trips. It lets you view all your trips in one place and look at them for each day. This makes it very easy to access all the details of each trip with one quick click.
