Aiyyaa is a romantic-comedy film set in a village context, and explores the dynamics of male-female relationships. The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit movie Pookkal Vidum Thudikkum, written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. It stars Rani Mukerji, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Prakash Raj and Kishore who play their roles from this original movie in an entirely different setting. The main character of the original tale was a male goat played by Mammootty, who falls in love with a reclusive female goat played by Salim Kumar, which is told from the point of view of this pair as they relate their recollections to those who love them. The movie revolves around these two characters talking to each other as they have been separated from each other just a day before their wedding. The film was released on 23 April 2013. The film received mixed reviews from critics. It has been labeled as a typical Bollywood attempt at remaking an already hit Malayalam movie. Film critic Anupama Chopra gave the movie 2 stars out of 5, saying that "for all its good intentions, Aiyyaa fails to deliver".
